Our stock market investments have been able to take advantage of opportunities in the market. After touching 15,539 in May, the Dow 30 Industrial Average is currently trading at 15,028. The expected correction in the stock market talked about in my last three newsletters is taking place as I write this newsletter. It may take a few months to unfold, but we view this decline as an opportunity to own more equities for a bull market in US stocks that we believe will continue for the next few years. American corporations have been buying back their stock and through that action, helped to drive stock prices higher. We believe that future stock market strength will occur when these companies finally grow their revenue and earnings through increased strength in their businesses and ultimately, hire additional employees. A real increase in business activity is what the Federal Reserve is focusing on. Recently, Ben Bernanke, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, said; “As the economic outlook and particularly the outlook for the labor markets improves in a real and sustainable way, the committee will gradually reduce the flow of purchases.” This improvement has yet to occur in a significant way, but it is obvious that the Fed is ready to act if the economy shows real strength, but at the same time, not act too soon – a delicate balancing act.
